Replacing the hands, dial, and movement is the heart of most mechanical mods. None of it is hard once you understand the order of operations and respect the fragile parts. This is a safe, beginner-friendly overview — pair it with a model-specific video before your first attempt.
Before you start: tools and safety
You'll need a movement holder, hand-setting tools, a dial protector, precision tweezers, a loupe, and a case opener. A clean, well-lit bench and patience matter more than anything. See the complete beginner tool kit for the full list, and the case opener and press guide for opening and closing the watch.
How to replace watch hands
Remove the old hands with a hand-removing tool over a dial protector, lifting straight up and evenly so you don't scratch the dial or bend the cannon pinion. To fit new hands, line them up and press down gently with a hand-setting tool — hour first, then minute, then seconds — checking that none of them touch each other or the dial. Set the time to 12:00 to confirm alignment.
How to replace a watch dial
With the hands off, the dial is usually held by two small dial feet (and sometimes dial screws on the movement side). Release the feet, lift the dial away carefully, and seat the new dial so its feet drop into the same holes. Make sure it sits flat before refitting hands.
How to change a watch movement
Swapping a movement is common when upgrading to an NH35/NH36. Remove the stem (press the release lever), lift the movement from the case, transfer the dial and hands to the new movement, and reseat it in the case or movement ring. Confirm the stem and crown line up before closing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Bending hands by pressing unevenly — always use the right tool over a protector.
- Fingerprints on the dial — handle with finger cots or tweezers.
- Forcing parts — if something resists, stop and check the orientation.
- Skipping the demagnetiser if the watch runs fast afterward.
Plan the look first
Before you order a dial, hands, and crystal, preview the combination so the colours and style actually work together. Use the 3D modding labs to test the look, then build with confidence.
