Best Seiko Watches to Mod (SKX, 5, Turtle, Samurai)

If you want to move from digital mods into mechanical watches, a Seiko mod is the classic next step. Seiko divers have huge aftermarket support, simple movements, and a community that has documented almost every build. Here are the best Seiko watches to mod and what makes each one a good base.

Why mod a Seiko?

Seiko's popular divers share common parts dimensions, so dials, hands, bezels, chapter rings, and crystals are widely available and often cross-compatible. The movements (like the 7S26, 4R36, and NH35/NH36) are robust, affordable, and easy to source. That combination is why "watch mod seiko" is one of the most searched terms in the hobby.

Seiko SKX007 / SKX009

The SKX is the icon of Seiko modding. Its case accepts a massive range of aftermarket dials, bezel inserts, and hands, and swapping the chapter ring and crystal transforms the look. It's the most documented mod platform, which makes it the best first Seiko to mod.

Seiko 5 / SRPD (5KX)

The newer Seiko 5 Sports (SRPD, often called the 5KX) is effectively the SKX's successor and shares much of its mod ecosystem, with a hacking/hand-winding movement. Great if you want SKX-style mods with a more modern base.

Seiko Turtle

The Turtle (SRP777 and family) has a distinctive cushion case and its own parts catalogue — dials, bezels, and inserts made specifically for it. A favourite for vintage-diver and "GMT-style" builds.

Seiko Samurai

The Samurai's angular case gives mods a sharper, more aggressive look. Parts support is strong, and bezel-insert and dial swaps go a long way on this model.

What you need to mod a Seiko

Beyond the watch and parts, you'll want the essential bench tools — case opener, case press, movement holder, and hand setters. See the beginner tool kit guide. New to the whole idea? Start with what is a mod watch.
