Want to try F-91W mod ideas before you buy parts? This guide covers every Casio F-91W modding tool in the MODDS.WATCH app: straps, color filters, LCD display modes, faceplate design, and Photo Studio. You will learn to design and export custom F-91W looks without touching your watch first.
The F-91W was released in 1989 as a simple, affordable everyday watch. It was not built to be flashy. But that no-nonsense design turned it into one of the most popular watches ever made, adopted by everyone from students to military personnel around the world. The clean lines, the rectangular case, the way it sits on your wrist - it is a blank canvas that already has personality. The modding tools in MODDS.WATCH let you enhance that character without losing what makes the F-91W great.
Section 1: Setting Up Your Scene
Environment Controls
The Environment panel sets the mood for your 3D workspace. Each environment changes how your F-91W materials look under different lighting:
- San Giuseppe Bridge - Golden hour warmth that makes metals glow and straps look rich
- Studio - Even lighting that reveals every detail and texture clearly
- Ulmet Muenster - Urban lighting with dynamic shadows that add depth
Tip: Want your F-91W to look tactical and serious? Choose Studio. Want it to feel warm? San Giuseppe Bridge works well. Try all three before deciding.
Lighting Direction
The circular slider beneath the environment buttons controls where the light comes from. Spin it around and watch how light moves across the F-91W surfaces. A brushed metal case might look flat in one position but come alive with highlights in another. Different angles can make the same watch look like a tactical piece or a dress watch.
Background Controls
- Classic White - Makes colors pop and details stand out
- Deep Black - Bold contrast, the F-91W becomes the star
- Custom color - Match your brand, Instagram theme, or personal style
Photo Studio
The built-in photography studio turns your digital creations into share-ready images:
- Format options - Square for Instagram posts or 16:9 for Stories
- Quality control - Standard for quick sharing, High for portfolio shots
- One-click capture - Professional framing built in
Section 2: Creative Tools
Color Filter System
The F-91W's LCD screen becomes your canvas. You can layer colors and textures over the digital display:
- Toggle on/off - Switch the color filter with one click
- Color picker - Choose from millions of colors
- Opacity control - From a barely-there tint to a bold statement
- Custom textures - Upload your own patterns, gradients, or graphics
Uploading Display Graphics
- Hit "Upload" in the Color Filter section
- Choose your image: photos, patterns, logos, whatever works
- Scale it using the X/Y controls
- Position it with offset controls
- Enable "Repeat" for tiled patterns, or leave it as a single graphic
Ideas that work well: gradient backdrops for added depth, camouflage patterns for a military theme, subtle logos, or abstract artwork.
LCD Mode Toggle
You can switch between two display styles:
- Classic Positive - Dark digits on light background (the standard look)
- Inverted Negative - Light digits on dark background (the retro 90s look)
The negative display was the height of cool in the 90s. It made your watch look like it belonged in a sci-fi movie. Now you can bring that aesthetic back with a single toggle.
Section 3: Watch Components
Case Controls
- Metallic - How metal-like the case appears (0 = plastic, 1 = pure metal)
- Roughness - Surface texture (0 = mirror smooth, 1 = rough/matte)
- Color - The base color of your case
Example: For a gold case, set metallic to 0.9+ with low roughness (0.1) and a warm gold color. For a stealthy matte black, use low metallic (0.3) with high roughness (0.8).
Strap Controls
The F-91W lab gives you three strap options, and the watch looks completely different with each one:
- F-91W Original Strap - The classic resin strap
- A168 Steel Strap - Metal bracelet from the A168 model
- Nato Strap (22mm) - Canvas/nylon strap with adapters
Each strap has its own material controls: "Match with Case" syncs colors automatically, plus you get metallic, roughness, color, and transparency sliders. The transparency slider is worth experimenting with for modern see-through effects.
When you select the Nato strap, you unlock texture upload. Upload leather patterns, canvas textures, camouflage, or any custom design.
Faceplate Controls
The watch face is what people notice first. You can customize:
- Base color - The underlying color of the face
- Material properties - Metallic and roughness
- Custom textures - Upload your own dial designs
Upload any image as a faceplate texture, scale it to fit, position it precisely, and tile it for patterns. This works for custom dials, logos, abstract art, or personal photos.
Section 4: Export and Tips
Sharing Your Creations
- Photo Studio Mode - Professional framing with aspect ratio control
- High-resolution screenshots - Crisp images for social media
- Multiple angles - Capture your mod from every angle
- Quality settings - Good or High quality export
Share on Reddit (r/casiomods, r/moddswatch, r/watchmodding), Casio forums, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook watch groups, or Discord.
Workflow Tips
- Start with strap selection. The F-91W looks completely different with each strap option. Try them all before picking colors.
- Use "Match with Case" for cohesive designs, then fine-tune from there.
- Try Photo Studio mode. 16:9 aspect ratio works well for Instagram stories, Square for posts.
- Experiment with Nato strap textures. Leather patterns, camouflage, or metallic textures can produce unique looks.
Common Questions
"Why does my texture look blurry?"
Try increasing the Scale X/Y values. Higher numbers give sharper textures. Also check if "Repeat" is enabled for better coverage.
"The colors don't look right in my screenshots"
Check your monitor calibration and try different background colors. Use Photo Studio mode for the most accurate color.
"Can I save my modds?"
Not yet (working on it!), but you can take high-quality photos of your favorite combinations for reference.
"Which strap should I choose?"
F-91W original for the classic look, A168 steel for a premium feel, Nato for versatility with textures.
What is Coming Next
